Police arrest three as AAU lecturer’s hotel death is investigated
Police in Edo State have arrested three people while investigating the death of Ambrose Alli University lecturer Matthew Uwuigbe at a hotel in Ekpoma.
Uwuigbe reportedly died on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of the town, in Esan West Local Government Area. Police have not disclosed the cause of death.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed the investigation on Tuesday. She said the command received a report at about 8pm on October 5 that the lecturer had lodged at the hotel with a 21-year-old woman whom police described as a sex worker.
According to Ikoedem, Uwuigbe sent the woman to buy water, and she found him lying dead when she returned. The hotel owner, manager and the woman were taken into custody to assist the investigation.
Premium Times reported that police had not indicated that the alleged sexual encounter caused his death. The arrests do not establish responsibility for the death.
University spokesperson Mike Aladenika confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff but said the incident happened off campus and the woman was not a student of the institution, according to the reports.
Ikoedem said the lecturer’s body had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
