Sokoto police say they foiled an attempted bandit attack on Tsabre community in Isa Local Government Area and recovered two rocket launchers after the attackers retreated.

The attack occurred at about 1am on Friday, October 2, when armed men entered the community and fired sporadically, according to a statement by police spokesperson Ahmad Rufa’i.

He said the Divisional Police Officer in Isa mobilised tactical teams after a distress call. Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Violent Crime Response Unit confronted the attackers in a gun battle.

The command said the attackers fled into a nearby forest with casualties. It did not give a casualty figure in the statement quoted by Punch and Daily Post.

Police said a search of the surrounding bushes yielded two rocket launchers and two empty AK-47 magazines. Officers also recovered a keypad phone without a battery, a torchlight, an Army jungle hat, a sweater cap, five pairs of sandals and a rain jacket.

Commissioner of Police Hayatu Shaffa commended the officers and urged residents to report suspicious people or activities promptly.

He also asked residents to alert the nearest police station if anyone with suspected gunshot wounds sought medical treatment, as efforts continued to locate the fleeing attackers.
