Eight people, including a police officer, have been killed after suspected Boko Haram fighters attacked Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The attack happened on Monday night. The reports said the attackers stormed the community, burned houses and shot residents before security forces were deployed to the area.

Punch and Vanguard reported that the dead were one police inspector and seven civilians. Daily Trust also reported seven civilians and one police officer killed, and added that four women who were abducted during the attack later escaped and returned home.

The chairman of Hong Local Government Area, Aliyu Saad, confirmed the attack in the reports. He said the attackers set two houses ablaze, while soldiers, police officers, hunters and other security operatives were sent after them.

Daily Trust reported that some residents were injured while fleeing and that the body of the police officer had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre in Hong.

The attack adds to the pressure on communities in Adamawa and the wider North East, where security forces are still dealing with insurgent raids on rural settlements.
