Police in Akwa Ibom have arrested four suspects over the alleged mob killing of 21-year-old Emmanuel Effiong in Uyo.

The state police spokesperson, Timfon John, said the victim was accused of stealing chickens and eggs from a poultry farm in Mbak 4 Community on April 19. Police said he was beaten with sticks and machetes until he died.

The investigation began after police received information and a viral video showing the victim being assaulted. Police said the footage showed him lying in blood with his hands and legs tied before he was dragged beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up van.

Investigators said the suspects later moved the body to a forest and buried it in a shallow grave. Channels TV reported that the suspects led investigators to the burial site, where the remains were exhumed and taken to a morgue.

Police said they recovered exhibits linked to the case, including the Mitsubishi vehicle allegedly used during the incident. Commissioner of Police Baba Azare condemned the killing and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
