Pipeline Explosion Rocks Abia Community, Damages Homes And Farms
A pipeline explosion has rocked Umuololo Owaza community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, destroying homes, farms, schools and aquatic life.
Daily Post reported that the explosion occurred on Monday along a pipeline that conveys petroleum from the Imo River flow station in Owaza to Port Harcourt and Bonny in Rivers State.
No lives were lost in the explosion, but residents said the pipeline had been dilapidated before the incident.
Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philomen Asonye Ogbonna, rushed to the site on Tuesday. A senior ministry official confirmed the explosion and said the government was assessing the extent of the damage.
Professor Joel Ogbonna, the state Commissioner for Petroleum, could not be reached for comment at the time of this report.
