The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria can only achieve the nation of its dreams by raising a new generation of responsible and visionary leaders committed to selfless service and good governance.

Vanguard reported that Obi made the remarks in a Facebook post on Sunday after his engagement with students of Madonna University, Okija Campus, during the NextGen Mentorship and Leadership Initiative themed “Beyond Now: Raising the Next Generation of Leaders.”

Obi said the interactive session provided an opportunity to engage with students whose questions reflected the frustrations of many young Nigerians over poor governance and widespread corruption, which he said had denied them opportunities to realise their full potential.

Daily Post reported that despite these challenges, Obi said he was encouraged by the students’ optimism and determination to contribute to national development.

He stressed that leadership remains the greatest determinant of a nation’s progress, adding that effective leaders must possess character, competence, capacity and compassion, as well as the willingness to make sacrifices for the good of the people.

Obi said Nigeria’s future depends on leaders who are committed to protecting lives, investing in education, creating opportunities and building strong institutions.

He urged the students to take their education seriously and prepare themselves for leadership roles, encouraging them to see themselves not merely as observers but as agents of change.

As part of his support for education, Obi presented a cheque of N15 million to Madonna University to support its educational programmes.
