Osun Assembly backs state police amendment bill

The Osun State House of Assembly has backed a constitutional amendment bill seeking to create state police services across Nigeria.

The resolution was passed during Tuesday’s plenary in Osogbo after lawmakers considered the bill sent to state legislatures as part of the ongoing amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

Vanguard reported that Majority Leader Babajide Kofoworola moved the motion for consideration of the bill, while Tajudeen Adeyemi seconded it. Speaker Adewale Egbedun said the Assembly’s approval should be forwarded to the National Assembly.

Daily Post reported that Egbedun told lawmakers the bill had been transmitted to state assemblies for consideration and approval under the constitutional amendment process.

The proposal still needs the required state-level backing before returning to the National Assembly for final approval and presidential assent. If completed, it would open the way for state police services, a long-running demand among governors and security reform advocates.
