Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called for a review of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Act and better equipment for operatives of the corps.

Daily Post and Leadership reported that Oshiomhole made the call in Abuja on Friday during the public presentation of a book by the NSCDC FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, titled Nigeria’s Security Dilemma: Rivalries and Implications.

The Edo North senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Interior, argued that the security environment facing the NSCDC has changed, especially as personnel are deployed against criminals involved in oil theft, vandalism of critical national assets, illegal mining and other violent crimes.

Daily Post reported that Oshiomhole questioned whether the word “Civil” in the agency’s name still fits the work expected of operatives who confront armed criminals. Leadership also reported his call for more sophisticated weapons for the corps.

The comments add to ongoing debate about how Nigeria’s security agencies should be structured and equipped as the country deals with attacks on public assets, illegal mining, vandalism and wider insecurity.
