OPay Seeks DSS, Police Probe Over Shutdown Rumour

OPay says it is working with the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate a false message claiming the fintech company is shutting down in Nigeria.
The company said the message did not come from OPay and that its Nigerian operations remain active.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, told reporters on Wednesday that the company had given investigators evidence to help identify those behind the message.
Rokosu said the company would pursue legal action against people who created and circulated the false information.
The company’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, said OPay was “operating” and had no decision to shut down its Nigerian business or place workers on indefinite leave.
The rumour had circulated online as a notice claiming the company would begin an indefinite break from September 2, 2026. OPay said customers should ignore it.
