Ooni Denies Conferring Chieftaincy Title On Baba Ijesha

The palace of the Ooni of Ife has denied reports that Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi conferred a chieftaincy title on Nollywood actor and comedian James Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha.

The denial followed Baba Ijesha’s claim that he had received the title “Awada Konge Oduwa” during a visit to the palace. The announcement attracted attention because of the actor’s public profile and the cultural weight attached to palace titles.

Palace spokesperson Moses Olafare said no chieftaincy title was conferred on the actor. The palace said Baba Ijesha, as an indigene of Ile-Ife, may be considered for honour in future, but the reported title had not been formally granted.

The clarification separates a palace visit from a formal chieftaincy process. It also leaves open the possibility of a future recognition while making clear that the title being circulated had not been approved.

The actor’s claim and the palace response have since become part of wider entertainment and cultural discussion around celebrity recognition, traditional titles and public announcements linked to royal institutions.
