One reported killed, seven injured in attack on Plateau traders’ bus
One person was reported killed and seven others injured when gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying traders from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday.
The traders were travelling towards Bassa Local Government Area when the attack occurred around the Total Filling Station axis in Bukuru. A community source told Premium Times that the injured victims were taken to hospital.
The Plateau chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Babayo, confirmed the attack and called for an investigation. Neither report included an official statement from the police or the military confirming the casualty figures.
The accounts differed on the time of the attack. Premium Times quoted a community source who put it at about 5:30pm near Yelwa Club Junction, while Daily Post reported about 6:30pm at the Bukuru Total Roundabout axis.
Daily Post described the vehicle as a Boxer bus carrying 20 traders returning to Rafin Bauna village in Bassa. It quoted Babayo as saying the victims were mostly Fulani and Hausa traders returning from the market.
Babayo urged the police and other security agencies to investigate and apprehend those responsible. Premium Times also reported his appeal for stronger security along the market route and for association members to remain calm and avoid retaliation.
The attackers’ identities and motive were not established. Premium Times said efforts to obtain comments from the Plateau Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace were unsuccessful at the time of its report.
