Ondo bans unverified alcoholic drinks after reported deaths

Ondo State has banned the sale and distribution of unverified alcoholic drinks and other substances after reports of deaths linked to a local herbal alcoholic mixture in Odigbo Local Government Area.

The state government said about 30 people died and about 50 others were hospitalised after consuming the drink commonly called monkey tail. Commissioner for Information and Orientation Idowu Ajanaku said the order covers drinks and substances sold in sachets, bottles or other forms when their source, contents or regulatory status cannot be verified.

The Ministry of Health has begun investigations into the substance suspected to have caused the deaths. The government said health and enforcement agencies would work to stop further sales while the investigation continues.

Daily Post also reported the casualty figures and said the ban was announced as an immediate public safety measure. Residents were urged to avoid uncertified alcoholic mixtures and report suspected dangerous products to the authorities.
