Ogun Relocates Students Over Methane Gas Pollution At Ijebu-Ode School
The Ogun State government has temporarily relocated students of Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, to an alternative location after preliminary findings confirmed the presence of methane gas on the school premises.
Vanguard reported that Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this during an on-the-spot assessment of the school, noting that the relocation became necessary to safeguard the health and safety of students, teachers, and other members of the school community.
According to the governor, the state government is collaborating with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University to determine the root cause of the contamination.
Daily Trust also reported the relocation, noting that three schools have been affected across two separate incidents of gas pollution at about the same time.
Abiodun said gas analyzers installed across the schools after the first occurrence confirmed the gas as methane, with preliminary findings suggesting geological factors such as fault lines may be responsible for the emissions.
The state government is awaiting a final report from professionals handling the investigation.
