The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps says it has rescued two 13-year-old girls in Gusau, Zamfara State, and arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of human trafficking.

The suspect, Bala Abubakar, was arrested in the Lalan area of Gusau on October 15 at about 8:30 p.m. The corps said the girls were being taken from Shinkafi Local Government Area.

In a statement reported by Daily Post and Channels Television, the NSCDC said preliminary investigations indicated that the girls were to be taken to Suleja in Niger State and handed over to two women identified as Hadiza and Bara’atu, also known as Yar Baba.

Daily Post reported that the command’s spokesman, Umar Mohammad, issued the statement in Gusau on Friday. The NSCDC said the girls were from Zurmi Local Government Area in Zamfara.

Zamfara Commandant Sani Mustapha directed that the case be transferred immediately to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for further investigation and necessary action.
