A Nigerian Catholic priest, Rev. Benjamin Okwy Madu, has died in Massachusetts after being told to return home because of a visa issue.

Madu, 54, was a priest of the Diocese of Abakaliki in Ebonyi State and had served in the Archdiocese of Boston as a hospital chaplain and parish priest since 2021.

Reports said his religious worker visa was due to expire on July 29 and that his home diocese had instructed him to return to Nigeria before then. Punch reported, citing the Boston Globe, that he died by suicide on July 2.

Church officials in Massachusetts confirmed his death and described him as a priest who had served local parishes and hospital patients for several years.
