Nigeria has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term, securing 172 of the 181 votes cast in a UN General Assembly ballot on October 13.

The country was elected alongside 14 others. Its three-year term will begin on January 1, 2027, and end on December 31, 2029.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the result on Wednesday in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi. The ministry thanked UN member states that supported Nigeria’s candidature.

The Human Rights Council has 47 member states and is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Its work also involves strengthening international cooperation on human rights issues.

The ministry said Nigeria would work with other council members through dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect. It reaffirmed the country’s commitment to initiatives that protect human dignity, justice and fundamental freedoms.
