Nigeria Denies Backing Niger Coup Claim

Nigeria has denied claims that it supported a failed military coup attempt in Niger Republic, saying it will not back an unconstitutional change of government in any country.

The denial came in a Thursday statement by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, after videos and claims circulated online accusing Nigeria and ECOWAS of supporting military action in Niger.

Enikanolaiye said the claims were baseless and misleading. He said Nigeria remained committed to democracy, constitutional rule and political stability in West Africa.

The statement also rejected claims that Nigeria, through ECOWAS, had supported or endorsed a military takeover in Niger. It said Nigeria’s concern was for Niger to return peacefully to stability and constitutional order.

The government asked Nigerians at home and abroad to disregard the circulating videos and narratives, saying they were meant to create confusion and damage Nigeria’s image.
