Niger Agency Warns Of Flood Risk Over Cracks At Kangimi Dam

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency has warned that reported cracks at Kangimi Dam in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State could pose a flood risk to downstream communities.

The warning covers communities in Kaduna, Niger State, the Federal Capital Territory and nearby areas that could be affected if the dam suffers a major failure.

The agency’s director general, Abdullahi Baba Arah, said the report of structural distress and visible cracks should trigger an immediate technical assessment of the dam.

Daily Trust and Premium Times both reported that the agency linked the concern to the August rains and called for coordinated preventive measures by federal and state authorities, dam managers and emergency agencies.

Arah said the warning was meant to promote preparedness, not panic. He urged people in possible downstream areas to stay alert and follow official safety advice.

The agency also warned that a sudden release of water from a major dam could damage homes, infrastructure and livelihoods if the risk is not checked early.
