NDPC Probes UNILAG, Lotus Bank And Hackerbella Over Data Breach Allegations

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission has opened a forensic investigation into the University of Lagos, Lotus Bank and Hackerbella Ltd over alleged breaches of Nigeria’s data protection rules.

The case centres on complaints that students’ personal details may have been used to open bank accounts without lawful consent. The commission said it is also examining allegations that an education-technology platform linked to the matter exposed personal data.

The NDPC said its investigators would review the roles of the organisations named in the complaints and determine whether any data controller or processor failed to meet the obligations set by law.

According to the reports, the commission warned that institutions handling personal data must show clear legal grounds for collecting, sharing or using such information. It also said organisations found liable could face sanctions under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.

The allegations remain under investigation. Punch and Vanguard did not report that any of the named organisations had been declared liable.
