The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) says its centres collected between 24,000 and 25,000 units of blood in 2025, as it calls for more voluntary donors.
Director-General Saleh Yuguda gave the figures through Aliyu Dahiru Waziri, head of the agency’s operations centre, at a media roundtable on Saturday.
Yuguda said too few voluntary donations were limiting blood reserves. He called for at least two per cent of the population to donate to improve access to transfusions.
The roundtable was organised by the agency and the International Society of Media in Public Health. The collection figure refers to the agency’s centres, rather than all blood collected across Nigeria.
Waziri said the agency was introducing a National Blood Management System to track donations through collection, processing and distribution to recipients. He said it would help trace a unit back to its donor if a transfusion problem arose.
He also said registered hospitals would send their requirements to the agency under an expanded hospital linkage programme, helping it plan supplies and avoid unsuitable storage and transport.
The reports did not give a launch date for the digital tracking system.
