NAFDAC Says Sachet Alcohol Fuels Banditry And Damages Health

NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye has defended the agency’s restriction on alcohol sold in sachets and small PET bottles, warning that easy access to such drinks is damaging public health and worsening social harm.

Adeyeye spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday. She said alcohol abuse affects the brain, kidneys and liver, and linked indiscriminate consumption to banditry and other social problems.

The NAFDAC chief said alcohol in sachets and PET bottles was approved decades ago but later became difficult to control. She said the agency acted because products below 200ml were too easy for children and young people to buy.

Daily Post quoted her as saying the ban was unpopular with some people, but that the concern was the future of children. Vanguard also reported her warning that sachet alcohol had become difficult to control.

The comments came amid public debate over NAFDAC’s enforcement actions and wider complaints about fake and unsafe products in Nigerian markets.
