Makinde Says Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers Are Held In Old Oyo National Park
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde says pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area are still being held within the Old Oyo National Park axis, nearly a month after they were taken by suspected bandits.
Makinde disclosed the update in his latest newsletter, saying security agencies were still pursuing credible leads to secure the safe release of the victims. The abductees were taken during attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in Esinle on May 15.
According to the governor, intelligence available to the state indicates that the victims remain within the wider Old Oyo National Park area, a vast and difficult terrain covering about 2,500 square kilometres across parts of several local government areas.
He said the size of the area and the nature of the terrain have created operational challenges for security personnel, but maintained that the government and security agencies have not abandoned the rescue effort.
Makinde urged residents to stay vigilant, avoid spreading unverified claims about the abduction, and report suspicious activity through the state emergency line. He said misinformation could undermine ongoing operations and endanger the victims.
The governor also appealed to residents to keep supporting security agencies with credible information while the search continues. The update gives a clearer indication of where authorities believe the abducted pupils and teachers are being held, and keeps attention on one of the most sensitive school-abduction cases in the South-West.
