Makinde Sets Up Panel To Investigate Oriire School Abduction

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has inaugurated an eight-member judicial commission to examine the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area and recommend ways to prevent another attack on schools in the area.

The panel is looking into the May 15, 2026 abduction in the Esiele and Yawata communities. Makinde said the work should establish what happened, identify any institutional or operational lapses, and help rebuild public confidence after the victims were rescued.

The commission is chaired by Prof. Mojeed Owoade and was inaugurated at the Governor’s Office in Agodi, Ibadan. Makinde said the panel was not set up to undermine security agencies, but to make sure unanswered questions around the incident are properly examined.

Reports said the governor also addressed claims that his administration had been linked to the abduction. He said the attack was not only against the affected communities, but against the right of children to learn safely and the confidence of parents who send children to school.

Makinde said rescue brought relief, but accountability and reform were still needed. The commission is expected to recommend steps to strengthen protection for schools and communities in Oriire and similar areas.
