MACBAN says 50 herders killed, 200,000 cattle lost in Kaduna insecurity

A herders’ association in Kaduna State says insecurity has killed at least 50 of its members and cost pastoralist families more than 200,000 cattle this year.

The Kaduna State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria said the losses happened between January and September 2026 through banditry, communal clashes and cattle rustling. The group said many affected families had lost their main source of livelihood.

MACBAN’s state chairman, Abdulhamid Musa Albarka, addressed journalists in Kaduna alongside other officials of the association. The group appealed to the Kaduna State Government, the Federal Government and security agencies to step up protection for rural communities and livestock routes.

The association also said some pastoralist households had been left in severe hardship after losing entire herds. The accounts from Punch and Vanguard both tied the figures to the same Kaduna MACBAN briefing.
