LAMATA Sets August 1 Enforcement For Cashless Bus Fares

Cash payments on regulated Lagos bus services will draw enforcement action from August 1, according to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority.

LAMATA said commuters using regulated public transport are expected to pay through the approved electronic platform, including the Cowry Card. The agency warned that passengers who offer cash and operators who accept it may face penalties under existing rules.

The warning was issued during an X Space discussion on Lagos cashless transit. LAMATA’s Head of Legal, Idris Akinola, said the rules already require electronic payment on regulated transport services and that unauthorised cash transactions could be treated as a breach by both sides.

The agency also asked passengers to report drivers or conductors demanding cash through its customer service channels. It said the policy is aimed at improving accountability in Lagos transport operations and reducing cash handling on regulated routes.

The August 1 enforcement date gives operators and passengers a final window to adjust before sanctions begin. For commuters, it means loading and carrying an approved payment card before boarding regulated buses.
