Lagos Says Sanitation Exercise Will Not Restrict Movement

Lagos State says residents are free to move during its monthly environmental sanitation exercise and that movement alone should not lead to arrest.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab made the clarification on Saturday after an X user asked about a fine for movement during the exercise and referred to an alleged arrest at Ikeja Police Station.

Wahab said there was no restriction on movement during the sanitation exercise. Punch and Vanguard quoted him as saying that arresting anyone on that basis was unlawful and did not represent the position or policy of the Lagos State Government.

The commissioner said the exercise was revived to encourage cleaner surroundings across Lagos, not to stop residents from moving around the state.

He urged residents to take part in cleaning their environment while making clear that enforcement agencies had not been authorised to arrest people merely for being on the move during the exercise.
