Lagos Needs 40,000 Doctors, Sanwo-Olu Unveils Healthcare Roadmap

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled a new healthcare roadmap, saying the state needs about 40,000 doctors to meet the needs of its growing population.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos currently has about 7,000 doctors and also faces a shortage of roughly 40,000 nurses. He spoke on Thursday at the opening of the second Eko Health Convention in Lagos.

The governor said the next phase of the state’s health reforms would focus on expanding access while improving the quality and sustainability of care. He said the plan would move beyond building facilities to creating institutions that can continue to serve residents effectively.

A major part of the roadmap is the expansion of digital healthcare through the Lagos Smart Health Information Platform, which is designed to improve patient care and data management. Sanwo-Olu said the platform’s first phase had reached about 30 per cent implementation.

He also highlighted efforts to strengthen primary healthcare, improve specialist services and make treatment more accessible regardless of residents’ location or income.
