Kogi Assembly Seeks Disbandment Of Vigilante Groups After Kupa Killings

The Kogi State House of Assembly has called for the disbandment of hybrid vigilante groups operating in Kupa District of Lokoja Local Government Area after a violent clash left at least 12 people dead.

Lawmakers also asked security authorities to recover firearms in the possession of the groups and restore calm in the affected communities.

The demand followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Speaker of the House, Aliyu Umar Yusuf. He said the crisis began from a disagreement involving local vigilante structures and later escalated into deadly violence.

Daily Post reported that the Assembly called for immediate action against the groups. Punch also reported that the lawmakers condemned the killings and asked the National Security Adviser to intervene.

The reports said several people were injured in the clash. They did not give a final official casualty breakdown beyond the 12 deaths cited by lawmakers.
