Kaduna Police Probe Viral Extortion Video Involving Officers
The Kaduna State Police Command has opened an investigation into a viral video that allegedly shows officers extorting motorists and cyclists during a stop-and-search operation.
Commissioner of Police Rabiu Muhammad ordered that the officers in the video be identified and invited for questioning, according to reports by Daily Trust and Vanguard.
The command said any officer found culpable would face sanctions. It also said routine roadblocks and stop-and-search operations had been limited, except where credible intelligence points to the movement of criminals, arms or other prohibited items.
Police spokesperson Mansir Hassan said the location shown in the video had been used by criminal elements in the past and was around a suburb of Millennium City.
The command said operatives had previously recovered 20 AK-47 rifles along the same route, but stressed that no officer was allowed to use security duties as an avenue for extortion or harassment.
The case now depends on whether the command identifies the officers in the footage and follows the investigation with visible disciplinary action.
