INEC Considers Mock Presidential Election Ahead Of 2027 Polls

INEC is considering a mock presidential election and a full audit of its election technology before the 2027 general election.

INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, disclosed the plan during a visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Amupitan said the proposals followed concerns from the 2023 elections, especially over the reliability of technology used for voter accreditation and result viewing. He said the mock poll would help test the commission’s processes before election day.

The INEC chairman said the exercises were not originally included in the commission’s budget, but the commission would look for ways to carry them out if they were considered necessary.

He also linked the plan to INEC’s work on BVAS, IReV and cyber-security, including system redundancy, penetration testing and disaster recovery.
