Imo State’s electoral commission has called off the local government election scheduled for 7 November, leaving voters without a new polling date.

Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) Chairman Charles Ejiogu announced the decision at a meeting with political parties and other electoral stakeholders in Owerri on Saturday.

The postponement affects elections for council chairmen and councillors across the state. Ejiogu said the exercise would cover 27 local government areas and 305 wards.

The poll was originally scheduled for 26 September. Ejiogu said some members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) had gone to court seeking more time, after which consultations led to the November date.

He said the commission was also working with security agencies to establish a joint committee to coordinate security before, during and after the elections.

Political parties were asked to avoid violence and the destruction of campaign materials. Ejiogu said the commission would announce a new election date, timetable and guidelines, but gave no deadline.
