Gombe Varsity ASUU Suspends Strike Plan After Govt Pledge
The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Gombe State University has suspended its planned industrial action after fresh commitments from the state government and the university management.
The union said the decision followed a congress meeting held on Friday, August 21, 2026, where members reviewed a government letter on the implementation of the new salary scale for academic staff and a memorandum with the university management on outstanding arrears.
In the resolution cited by Punch, the branch gave the government and management until the end of October 2026 to implement the promises. The resolution was signed by the branch chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.
Daily Trust also reported that the union suspended its action after an agreement with the state government. It said the issues included funding, welfare, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances and other entitlements owed to staff.
The union warned that the strike could resume if the agreements are not implemented within the stated period. It also called on the government to fulfil the remaining parts of the agreement reached with the branch.
