Five Die, 10 Rescued After Two Building Collapses In Kano
Five people have died after two separate buildings collapsed in Kano State, while emergency responders rescued 10 others from the rubble.
The incidents happened on Saturday at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and at Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area. The Kano State Fire Service said the first collapse involved an incomplete building near Salbas Filling Station in Gaida, where six workers were trapped.
Two workers, Muhammad Hassan, 17, and Khalid Abubakar, 19, were rescued alive. Four others were brought out unconscious and later confirmed dead: Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30.
Minutes later, a religious school building, Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya, collapsed behind a primary school in Kurna. Eight students were rescued alive, while 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad was later confirmed dead after she was pulled from the rubble unconscious.
The fire service said the victims from the Gaida site were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and handed over to police. The students rescued from Kurna were handed over to the school headmaster.
Officials said the causes of both collapses were still under investigation and urged building owners, contractors and workers to comply with approved safety standards, especially during the rainy season.
