Five Dead, Eight Rescued In Multiple-Vehicle Crash On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
At least five people have died in a multiple-vehicle accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with eight others rescued alive from the scene.
The crash occurred on Friday night around 10 p.m. near Satguru Maharaji Ji Village, just before the Ibadan Toll Gate, according to the Oyo State Fire Service Agency.
Officials said the incident involved six trucks, two Toyota Hilux vans, and two cars. Eyewitnesses said one of the trucks may have suffered brake failure and crashed into a parked truck, causing a chain collision that killed five people.
Eight people were pulled from the wreckage alive with varying degrees of injuries. Fire service personnel and other emergency responders worked through the night to clear debris and attend to victims.
The accident tied up traffic along the expressway through the early hours of Saturday as recovery vehicles worked to remove the wreckage.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s busiest roads, connecting Lagos to the southwest. Crashes involving tankers and articulated vehicles happen frequently on the route, often because of brake failures, poor visibility, and lack of parking space for heavy-duty trucks.
Authorities have urged motorists to slow down and drive carefully, especially at night when visibility is poor and parked vehicles can be hard to see.
