Firefighter Entered Diesel Tank To Save Trapped Man, Fire Service CG Says

A Federal Fire Service officer in Plateau State entered a diesel tank to rescue a trapped man and later ended up in hospital, according to the service’s Controller-General, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi.

Adeyemi said the firefighter survived the operation and saved the victim’s life. He gave the account while speaking in Abuja at the unveiling of quarter guards at the Federal Fire Service headquarters and the Wuse Area Command.

Daily Trust and Vanguard both reported that the Controller-General used the incident to underline the risks firefighters face during emergency response work.

Adeyemi said the service had addressed operational complaints linked to water and diesel shortages. He said the old excuse of having no water or diesel should no longer stop firefighters from responding to distress calls.

He also said his administration had tried to improve welfare and morale in the service. Daily Trust reported that he linked the newly unveiled quarter guards to discipline and professionalism, while Vanguard reported that he earlier diverted funds meant for a reception in his honour to buy mattresses and other supplies for firefighters.
