Fire destroys shops and goods at Abuja’s Kugbo furniture market
A fire has destroyed shops and goods at Kugbo Furniture Market along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, with traders trying to salvage belongings as smoke spread through the market.
The blaze broke out on Friday. Furniture, equipment and other goods were damaged, according to Vanguard, which reported that firefighters and other emergency responders were sent to the scene.
An eyewitness, Mary Aniekan, told the newspaper that she noticed an electrical spark before the fire spread. She said traders raised the alarm and tried to put out the flames and recover their belongings.
Aniekan also said firefighters ran out of water while battling the blaze. Her account of the spark does not establish the cause of the fire, which had not been independently confirmed by emergency authorities.
Vanguard reported no loss of life. The exact value of the destroyed goods had not been officially established, and the number of affected shops was not specified.
Firefighters were working to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining shops and structures. Affected traders called for assistance to assess the damage and recover from their losses.
