Smoke rises as people gather at the scene of the Bode Market fire in Ibadan

A fire outbreak has destroyed several shops at Bode Market in the Molete area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident happened in the early hours of Friday, affecting a section of the popular market and leaving traders counting losses.

Daily Post reported that operatives of the Oyo State Fire Service were at the scene working to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market.

Punch reported that firefighters were deployed promptly and eventually brought the fire under control.

The cause of the inferno had not been determined as of press time, while the exact number of affected shops and the full scale of losses were still unclear.

The incident came only weeks after another fire outbreak at Dugbe Market in Ibadan, adding to concerns among traders over repeated market fire incidents in the city.

Bode Market is a major trading hub in Ibadan, known for herbs, animal skins and other traditional products, and draws traders from the South-West and other parts of Nigeria.
