FCCPC Orders Recall Of Products With Misleading Labels
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has ordered businesses to remove consumer goods with incomplete, misleading or deceptive labels from the market.
The directive applies to manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers across Nigeria. The commission said the order followed market checks and routine inspections that found goods without required product information.
The missing or misleading details listed in the reports include production dates, expiry or best-before dates, batch numbers, manufacturer information, ingredient lists, allergen information and country of origin.
The FCCPC said such labelling failures deny consumers the information they need before buying products and could expose them to health, safety and financial risks.
The commission linked the directive to its powers under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018. It also referred to labelling standards set by agencies including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.
Businesses were told to review their stock and withdraw non-compliant goods from sale. The commission warned that companies that fail to comply could face regulatory sanctions.
