EU Allocates €1.5m For Cholera Response In Nigeria

The European Commission has allocated €1.5 million to support Nigeria’s response to the ongoing cholera epidemic, as part of a €2.3 million emergency package for four African countries.

The funding is intended to expand intervention teams, provide cholera kits and support water, sanitation and hygiene work, including treatment of public water points and household water. It is also expected to strengthen disease surveillance in hard-to-reach areas, case management, risk communication and community sensitisation.

Nigeria will receive the largest share of the package. Cameroon is allocated €100,000, the Central African Republic €500,000 and Chad €200,000.

The Commission said more than 61,000 cholera cases were reported across the African Region in the first five months of 2026, citing the World Health Organization. Cholera is commonly spread through contaminated water and can cause severe dehydration if untreated.

The funding comes as health responders work to limit transmission through safer water, sanitation support and faster treatment for affected communities.
