The Cross River State task force on health quality and anti-quackery has sealed Safe Hands Maternity Clinic in Calabar Municipality after a patient reportedly died following surgery at the facility.

Premium Times reported that the facility was operating from a converted residential building and lacked the licences, staff records, theatre records and sanitation standards expected of a proper medical centre. The task force also said the operator was a community health extension worker, with surgery allegedly carried out by a doctor from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

The closure highlights the state government’s wider crackdown on unlicensed health facilities and the dangers patients face when clinics operate below minimum standards.
