Court Declines Adeniyi Adeyemi’s Bail Request In PFIPC Case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to immediately grant bail to Adeniyi Adeyemi, the detained man at the centre of the PFIPC controversy.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu ruled on Thursday that the police and other respondents should first be heard before the court decides on Adeyemi’s request for bail and medical access.

The judge, however, ordered that Adeyemi should be allowed access to his lawyers. Channels TV reported that the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force and the Attorney-General of the Federation were also directed to show cause within 72 hours why the other reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted.

Adeyemi had sued the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force and an Assistant Inspector-General of Police. He asked the court to order his release from detention, admit him to bail and allow him to seek medical attention from health practitioners of his choice.

The case is the latest court development in the dispute over the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council. NaijaTrend earlier reported the House of Representatives panel findings on the PFIPC controversy here.

Police have accused Adeyemi of forgery, fraud and impersonation in an earlier charge. The allegations remain before the court, and the next hearing in this bail-related matter is expected on September 9.
