CAN Marks Black Sunday Across Nigeria Over Insecurity Victims

The Christian Association of Nigeria has marked Sunday, June 14, 2026, as Black Sunday across the country in honour of victims of insecurity.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the observance was meant to mourn Nigerians affected by violence, kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and attacks on communities.

The Christian body said the victims include men, women, children, clergy, farmers, students and entire communities whose lives have been disrupted by insecurity.

Okoh said churches were not only mourning but also calling for stronger protection of lives and property. He linked the observance to Nigeria’s Democracy Day period, saying democratic values cannot be separated from the safety and dignity of citizens.

CAN called on government at all levels to take urgent and sustained steps to secure Nigerians. It also urged churches, Christian schools, hospitals and mission institutions to improve security awareness, emergency readiness and local vigilance.

The association commended the House of Representatives for passing the Community and State Policing bill, describing it as a step that could strengthen grassroots security if the process is completed.

The Black Sunday message comes as many communities continue to report kidnappings, killings and attacks linked to armed groups in different parts of the country.

The association said the pattern of violence has left displaced families, bereaved relatives and frightened communities needing both practical support and stronger official protection.

CAN also urged Christians to support affected families and communities while continuing to pray for peace, justice, national healing and safer daily life.
