The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as Black Sunday to mourn victims of terrorist attacks across the country.

The association also announced national prayers from June 12 to 14, following its National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026 in Abuja.

Speaking at the end of the summit, CAN Chairman Archbishop Daniel Okoh said prayers alone are not enough to tackle the security situation and called for concrete government action.

Okoh urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity. He also called for the acceleration of state police and decentralisation of the security apparatus to enable quicker responses to threats.

“We need concrete actions to tackle the menace. There must be a state of emergency on insecurity,” Okoh said.

The CAN chairman also demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped victims across the country, with justice served appropriately.

The declaration comes amid rising insecurity nationwide, including mass abductions, terrorist attacks, and communal clashes that have claimed hundreds of lives in recent weeks.
