Bauchi police have arrested four suspects over a farmer-herder clash in Guda Village, Ningi Local Government Area, in which a 40-year-old man died and houses were burnt.
The arrests were made on October 8 following a clash on September 23, according to a police statement issued on Friday by command spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib. The man who died was identified as Usman Jibrin.
Police said three farmers went to their farms on Guda Hill and found cattle grazing on their crops. They chased the cattle to a herders’ settlement, where an argument escalated into a fight that injured the farmers.
The command said some youths from Guda Village then retaliated by setting houses in the settlement ablaze. Officers from the Ningi Division restored order and took the injured to General Hospital, Ningi. Jibrin later died while receiving treatment, police said.
The four suspects are being investigated for criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, mischief by fire and culpable homicide.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation. He urged farming and herding communities to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than taking the law into their own hands.
