Defection talks collapse after APC rejects governor’s terms

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has officially pulled the plug on talks to join the All Progressives Congress, ending weeks of speculation about his political future. The PDP’s Bauchi State chairman, Samaila Adamu Burga, confirmed the development at a press conference on Saturday, stating that the proposals put forward by the governor’s camp were not accepted by the APC national leadership.

The defection drama started when APC national chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, visited Mohammed at the Bauchi Government House on April 1. That visit came just a day before the governor was expected to finalize a realignment with the African Democratic Congress, a move that was derailed when INEC withdrew recognition from the David Mark-led national executive committee of the ADC.

With the ADC option looking uncertain, Mohammed explored terms with the APC. Both sides initially showed interest, but fundamental issues could not be resolved. According to Burga, after “careful and extensive considerations, the proposals put forward during the negotiations were ultimately not accepted by the APC leadership.”

The collapse of talks also follows resistance from within the APC itself. On April 8, the Bauchi APC caucus, led by senator Sani Kaura, unanimously rejected the governor’s proposed admission, with the caucus stating that his entry would be “detrimental to the party’s cohesion, credibility, and electoral prospects in Bauchi State.”

Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, now faces a familiar dilemma. He had flirted with the ADC before the INEC decision scrambled that path, and the APC door has now slammed shut. Political observers in Bauchi say the governor may dig in with the PDP or explore new alliances ahead of 2027, but his options are narrowing.

The defection saga underscores a broader pattern: high-profile politicians are struggling to find stable party platforms as the PDP fragments, the ADC grapples with leadership crises, and the APC proves selective about who it welcomes.
