Atiba University DVC Draws Anger Over Remarks To Protesting Law Students

A senior official of Atiba University in Oyo State has drawn criticism after describing some protesting law students as “intellectually bankrupt” during a confrontation over the school’s Law programme.

The students were protesting after the Council of Legal Education imposed a 10-year moratorium on the university’s Law programme over reported facility deficiencies and alleged breaches of legal education rules.

Punch reported that the official was identified as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor and that the confrontation was captured in a video shared online. The report said affected students and graduates were worried about their progression to the Nigerian Law School.

The National Association of Nigerian Students also criticised the university’s handling of the matter. In a statement dated August 24, NANS said it stood with the affected law students and questioned why the university continued to admit students into the programme despite the recognition dispute.

Vanguard also reported the video and the same remark, tying the controversy to the students’ protest over the Law programme.
