ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike At Nasarawa State University

Lecturers at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, have begun an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare issues and the non-implementation of agreements with academic staff.

The strike took effect on Monday after the university branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities said talks with the relevant authorities had not produced the expected results.

The branch chairman, Zubairu Loko, said the union had secured approval from ASUU’s national leadership before withdrawing services. The union said the action followed a branch congress over the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and local issues affecting lecturers at the university.

The grievances include outstanding payments and other entitlements linked to earned academic allowances, minimum wage adjustments and the approved salary increase for university lecturers. Premium Times reported that the disputed payments had previously been estimated at more than N3 billion.

Daily Post reported that the union described the action as comprehensive and indefinite, saying it had exhausted several rounds of dialogue and engagement without getting satisfactory implementation of the agreements.

The Nasarawa branch also appealed to the federal government, the state government, the university governing council and management to resolve the issues. It apologised to students and parents for the disruption but said academic work would not resume until the matters that led to the strike were addressed.

The development comes as ASUU’s national leadership authorised several university branches to begin strike processes over the pace of implementation of the 2025 agreement. Premium Times reported that the union’s National Executive Council is expected to review developments at an emergency meeting later in August or early September.
