ASUU Says ABSU Strike Will Continue Until Suspended Lecturer Is Recalled

The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Abia State University says its strike will continue until suspended lecturer Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze is recalled.

The ABSU branch began an indefinite strike on August 11 over unpaid salaries. The university management suspended Nwaeze the next day over social media posts it said were against the interest of the institution and Governor Alex Otti, who is the visitor to the university.

ASUU-ABSU chairman Chidi Mbah rejected the suspension, saying the university should have followed procedures in its edict if it believed the lecturer had committed an offence. He said the union did not accept the action and would sustain the strike until Nwaeze was reinstated.

Vanguard reported that Mbah made the union’s position after a meeting with the university management. Punch also reported the union leader’s insistence that the strike would not end until the suspended professor was recalled.

The union’s demand adds to the salary dispute already affecting academic activities at the university.
