SERAP sues INEC over political donation limits and party finances

SERAP has taken INEC to court over political donation limits and party finances ahead of the 2027 elections.

The case, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, asks the court to compel the electoral commission to disclose whether it has set limits on political contributions under Section 91 of the Electoral Act 2026 and how those limits are being enforced.

Punch, Daily Post and Premium Times reported that the suit is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2114/2026. SERAP also wants INEC to publish any specific contribution limits, explain how they were communicated to political parties, candidates, donors and the public, and disclose its systems for monitoring campaign spending.

The rights group is also asking for political parties’ latest financial statements, audited accounts, sources of funds, assets, liabilities and election-spending returns for 2023 to 2025.

SERAP said voters, journalists and civil society groups cannot properly scrutinise political finance when contribution limits and enforcement arrangements are not easy to find. It argued that INEC’s role includes examining party finances, conducting investigations and reporting to the National Assembly.

The case is a new legal step after earlier public calls for INEC to release political-finance information before the 2027 polls.
