UNIPORT ASUU declares indefinite strike over salaries, allowances

The University of Port Harcourt branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite local strike over incomplete salary payments and responsibility allowances.

The union says members will stop lectures, examinations, invigilation and other official duties during the action. It has set up a monitoring team to check compliance across the university’s campuses and centres.

Branch secretary Tarila Amakoromo said the decision followed an emergency congress on September 16. At an earlier congress on September 11, the union had given the university administration a deadline ending at midnight on September 15 to address its demands.

According to the statement reported by Punch, the complaints include incomplete salaries for June, July and August 2026, incomplete responsibility allowances, and non-payment of those allowances to lecturers in the School of Health Sciences under the CONMESS and CONHESS pay structures.

The branch also alleged that its members had been excluded for more than two years from monthly responsibility allowances paid to members of other unions. It said university administrators met union representatives on September 11 and promised a response before the deadline, but did not resolve the complaints.

Daily Post reported that branch chairperson Professor Omeh Obasi Ngwoke also linked the dispute to the implementation of federal directives and the December 2025 government-ASUU agreement. He said the branch would continue the action until its demands were met.

This is a local UNIPORT strike, not a declaration of nationwide industrial action.
